Turkish State Minister and Chief EU negotiator Egemen Bagis had to meet with criticism against Ankara while participating in a forum organized in Barcelona.

Director General for Enlargement Michel Leigh present at the conference pointed out problems with freedom of press in Turkey, arrests of journalists, as well as bans on publishing certain books, Turkish Hurriyet newspaper reports. He also recalled Ergenekon case and demolition of the monument to Armenian-Turkish friendship.

The European official stressed Turkey is pursuing “zero problems with neighbors” policy but at the same time is destroying monument to Armenian-Turkish friendship.

In response to critical statements Bagis noted Turkey has not changed its position on Armenia. “Demolition of the monument bears no relation to Armenia. Besides, residents of Kars also contribute to normalization of relations with Armenia, as it will further establishment of economic relations and development of the region,” he said.
