On March 7, Erzurum Administrative Court made a decision on demolition of Monument to Humanity dedicated to the Armenian-Turkish friendship, Turkish Zaman daily reports.

A week ago the court had decided to suspend the demolition of Kars Monument, before a final decision is made. However, the decision was appealed by Kars Mayor and the court allowed to demolish the monument, branded as “monstrous” by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier, a lawsuit was filed to Erzurum Administrative court to prevent the demolition of the monument dedicated to Armenian-Turkish friendship in Kars.

According to the lawsuit, the Monument of Humanity is one of the samples of modern Turkish art by famous sculpture Mehmed Aksol Turkish. His sculptures decorate places of interest in Berlin, Istanbul and other cities.

A month ago City Council of Kars decided by a majority vote to demolish the monument dedicated to the Armenian-Turkish friendship, branded by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as “monstrous”.

Former Mayor of Kars Naif Alibeyoglu has always stood for the opening of the Armenia-Turkey border without any preconditions and for this purpose organized a collection of signature in Kars. On his initiative, a large monument was put to represent the Armenian-Turkish friendship and peace. However, Alibeyoglu was defeated in the mayoral elections in 2009. The unfinished monument was put near the old Armenian district of Kars.
